Volunteer for St Albans Mencap

Volunteers play a key role at St Albans Mencap and help in all areas including at clubs, at fundraising events or with general administrative office work. We simply could not run without volunteers and can find a role suitable for nearly everyone.

Meet Tatiana – One of Our Amazing Volunteers

Volunteers are the heart of St Albans Mencap, and Tatiana is a fantastic example of the difference they make.

Tatiana is 21 and graduated from the University of Kent last summer with a degree in Media Studies. Since November 2025, she has been volunteering with St Albans Mencap a couple of days a week — supporting members at Trinity and helping with our social media.

“I really wanted to do something that helped people and felt fulfilling,”

A typical day for Tatiana starts by helping set up the day centre before welcoming members as they arrive. She supports a range of activities including arts and crafts, bowling and group games, and spends time chatting with members about their lives and weekends.

“I really enjoy talking with the service users and helping them take part in activities. It’s very rewarding.”

Tatiana’s favourite moments are often the simplest ones — like the weekly game of Uno with members and staff.

“I was very happy when I finally won for the first time!”

Through volunteering, Tatiana says she has learned to appreciate the small things.

“A small enjoyable moment in someone’s day can bring them a lot of happiness.”

Volunteers Make St Albans Mencap Possible

At St Albans Mencap, we simply couldn’t deliver the welcoming, inclusive environment our members enjoy without volunteers like Tatiana.

Their time, kindness and energy make a huge difference — not just to our organisation, but to the people we support every day.

Tatiana was surprised by how quickly she settled in.

“I was surprised by how fun it is. I would definitely recommend volunteering — it’s very enjoyable and flexible.”

Could You Volunteer With Us?

Being part of the St Albans Mencap team enables you to meet new friends and gain life and work experience in a setting you may currently be unfamiliar with. Some of our volunteers have gone on to becoming paid staff at St Albans Mencap as a direct result of their commitment to volunteering. It will be possible to moving up to different roles with the opportunity of taking on more responsibility if you wish.
