Future Projects
Following feedback from parents and with the support of the ambitious Board of Trustees, SNAP is looking to expand it current offering. Based on highly successful past schemes, we are looking to introduce our SNAP Woodland Activities and our SNAP Independent Living Services.
SNAP Woodland Activities – Reconnecting with Nature
St Albans Mencap aspire to relaunch SNAP Woodland Activities, a much-loved programme offering young people with learning disabilities the chance to explore, learn and thrive in nature.
Running once a month throughout the year, these sessions provide fun, safe and stimulating outdoor experiences for children (aged 10–18) and young adults (aged 19–25). Activities include den building, nature trails, woodland games and seasonal crafts, with alternative indoor trips—such as visits to local museums—during the winter or bad weather.
Our woodland sessions have always been hugely popular with families and carers, offering a rare opportunity for affordable, inclusive outdoor learning in Hertfordshire. The programme helps participants build confidence, develop social skills, improve physical and mental well-being, and foster a deeper connection with nature.
By re-establishing SNAP Woodland Activities, St Albans Mencap aims to bring back a service that families have told us they value deeply—one that encourages independence, teamwork and self-belief in a welcoming, supportive environment.

SNAP Independent Living – Buy, Cook and Eat
St Albans Mencap are also hoping to relaunch SNAP Independent Living Services, which encompasses our popular Buy, Cook and Eat programme.
These fun, hands-on sessions help young people with learning disabilities develop essential life skills around shopping, cooking and healthy eating. Participants will plan simple meals, learn how to budget and shop for ingredients, and gain confidence preparing and cooking their own dishes in a supportive environment.
Each session promotes independence, confidence and social interaction, while encouraging healthier choices and practical skills that can be used at home and in the community. Families have told us how valuable these sessions are — not only for improving everyday skills, but also for the sense of pride and achievement they bring to participants.
By relaunching Buy, Cook and Eat, St Albans Mencap aims to help young people build independence, make new friends and enjoy the satisfaction of creating something for themselves.
